WSJ’s Walter Mossberg answers readers’ questions, suggests CrashPlan

In yesterday’s Wall Street Journal tech questions column, a reader asked for Walt Mossberg’s advice on the best way to assure that all their digital documents will remain safe.

Walt’s advice included backing up key files, like documents and photos, on a frequent basis. He emphasizes that back ups should be performed both locally, like on an external hard disk, and remotely, to a cloud-based backup service. This is something we totally agree with! Walt suggests CrashPlan as an option for backup, and makes reference to a recent review of CrashPlan by his colleague, Katie Boehret.

For Walt’s official answer, visit Mossberg’s Mailbox from March 6, 2012.

No more ‘dog ate my homework’ excuses

Today, most students own numerous gadgets – laptops, tablets, digital cameras and smartphones – all of which are full of precious documents, projects, videos and photos. As students make their return back to school in the coming months, it’s important to make sure they are digitally prepared to avoid any data disasters.

Easy to use at home or away at school, CrashPlan+ allows you to automatically backup your data to the computers of your friends and family and to CrashPlan Central – a secure, online backup destination.

In addition to its many features, CrashPlan+ offers multiple backup sets, meaning you can specify which files go to which locations and with what settings. For example, the prom photos are saved to your family’s home computer while your student’s school papers and projects are backed up to their roommate’s laptop, as well as online.

Keep your student, or the student in you, organized and secure with CrashPlan+ backup. Grab a free trial of CrashPlan for yourself today.

If you are not backing up, you are begging for a disaster

Last week, Paul Colligan of eMarketingVids discussed how CrashPlan+ leverages both the cloud and other computers to back up files.

He couldn’t be more on target. We encourage all CrashPlan users to maximum your protection and increase restore options by backing up to multiple backup locations: local, social and with CrashPlan+ online to CrashPlan Central. Increase your backup destinations to ensure you can get back your lost files.
