CrashPlan automatically collects regular updates to files on custodians’ devices. This means end-users are able to maintain productivity and Legal has better visibility into file activity over time rather than at one instant.

Chain-of-Custody Validation

Because CrashPlan is constantly monitoring file activity for changes and collecting data from the source, it’s possible to provide a reasonable chain-of-custody to the court. Plus, data access and preservation policy changes are logged and auditable in-program.

Custodian Invisible

When a user is placed on legal hold there is no change in user experience or feedback within the CrashPlan app. From the perspective of the user, there is no difference between the standard backup process and being placed on legal hold.

Version Retention

Scenario-specific preservation policies allow legal and IT teams to preserve exactly the files and versions which a given legal matter dictates. Because legal hold is an extension of CrashPlan’s core backup capabilities, data contained in users’ standard file selection will also be included among versions available after the user is placed on hold—even deleted files.

CrashPlan preserves all file metadata. This means that timestamps, file-permissions, and directory paths will be preserved and accurate as of the time of version collection and available for discovery.

CrashPlan has granular roles and permissions which govern access backed-up data. Access is easily defined manually or by group membership within your directory service.

This allows Legal and IT to define the best workflow and division of duties for your organization to allow for a seamless, secure, and speedy management process.
